The Tower

The mosaic on the 44-foot Tower of the Four Winds conveys Black Elk's message of peace and unity for all people.

The design depicts the crossing of the roads.  The food red road of spiritual understanding leads from the great spirit to mother earth.  The horizontal black road of difficulties is the one that all people must walk.

Black Elk said, "The good road and the road of difficulties you have made to cross and where they cross -- that place is holy."

In that central holy place a Messiah figure with no identifiable race or distinguishable features stands before the tree of life, arms outstretched in benediction over all people.  Hoops of radiant light expand to the blue sky, and birds fly in among the leaves of the cottonwood tree of life.
